At a meeting earlier this week the local Liberal Democrat party confirmed the reselection of the three current Southfield Councillors (Gary Busuttil, Gary Malcolm and Andrew Steed).

They will be the party’s candidates for the ward in the local elections which take place in May next year. The vote took place amongst Liberal Democrat members.

All three Councillors live locally and have been councillors in Southfield for between 8 and 20 years.

Southfield is the only ward in Ealing in which the Liberal Democrats currently hold every seat. They only have one other councillor in the borough.

The ward boundaries cover the Acton Green area of Chiswick as well as much of Bedford Park as well as parts of Acton near the Uxbridge Road.

The local councillors have campaigned on a range of issues including plans for tall buildings, street lighting and the closure of Chiswick police station as well as opposing the restrictions at Fishers Lane. They have held two surveys on the latter issue which they say shows overwhelming opposition to the measure which they believe adds to congestion and pollution in the ward.

Gary Busuttil said, “Residents in Southfield and our borough are fed up with the Council failing to inform, involve or consult them on important decisions affecting us in Southfield. Liberal Democrats want the Council to bring back ward forums so that local people can have a say on how their money is spent in our area.”

Gary Malcolm added, “From the many times we have knocked on doors the Liberal Democrats know that people are concerned with the dirty, leaf filled streets where potholes and broken kerbs are still too common. Liberal Democrats want clean and safe streets and parks. We want to see Chiswick Police station opened up which was closed after Tory government cuts.”

Southfield Councillor Andrew Steed added, “Labour in Ealing have voted through and allowed large tower block after large tower block to affect our area without the necessary infrastructure to give people good access to healthcare and schooling. They are ignoring people’s views and only recently agreed to the Liberal Democrat proposal to consult residents on which types of developments the Council should allow in the future.”
