The next performance in the Iris Axon Convert Series is to feature flautist Grace Callaghan accompanied by Keelan Carew.

They will be playing a number of pieces suitable for the flute at the usual venue on Sunday 6 April at 4pm.

The programme is as follows:

Telemann: Fantasia for Flute in A Major TWV 40
Debussy: Syrinx
Faure: Fantasie
Manuel de Falla - Nana
George Hüe - Fantasie
Ian Clarke - Deep Blue
short interval
Bizet arr. Borne - Carmen Fantasy

Grace Callaghan graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music in 2022, where she studied under Laura Jellicoe, Kevin Gowland and Cormac Henry. She was taught the piccolo by Janet Richardson and Jenny Hutchinson. Since graduation she has grown a keen interest in teaching and passing her love of flute playing onto the next generation of students. Grace gives regular recitals around London at venues such as the Savile Club, as well as freelancing with various orchestras in and around London. She regularly records with the Northern Film Orchestra, and has performed at venues such as Royal Albert Hall, King’s Place, Cadogan Hall and the Royal Festival Hall.

Jane Schopf, founder and organiser of the series says, “The acoustic at Acton Hill Church is perfect for the flute as the wooden barrel-vault ceiling (the largest such in London) brings out the middle harmonics, creating a warm and luxurious tone.
Their programme certainly promises plenty of warmth and colour.”

Tickets are priced at £6 adults / £5 concessions / £2 children. Pay at the door.

The Iris Axon Concert Series is an annual season of short (60-70 minute) monthly recitals on Sunday afternoons at the Acton Hill Church. The series was started by Music Director Jane Schopf in 2004 to provide a venue for young musicians starting on their professional careers, many of whom have subsequently enjoyed international success in competitions and on the concert platform. The series has continued to grow and now attracts established international artists as well.

Originally called the Acton Classical Music Concert Series, it was re-named in 2009 in memory of one of its most loyal supporters, Iris Axon, who made possible the purchase of a concert grand, handmade by Clive Pinkham.

The church is deemed ideal for concerts as it has the largest unsupported wooden barrel-vault ceiling in London which brings out the middle harmonics, creating a luxuriously warm sound.

Concerts are usually held on the first Sunday of the month at 4pm. Programmes at the door. There are crèche facilities available.
