A targeted four-day police operation at Tesco on The Vale has led to multiple arrests and a sharp drop in shoplifting, following concerns raised by residents in recent local priority surveys.

Acton’s Safer Neighbourhood Teams joined forces with Tesco staff and the Met’s Tasking Support Unit after analysis showed the Acton store had the highest number of shoplifting offences anywhere in the borough. Officers carried out a sustained enforcement initiative last week, focusing on prolific offenders and peak offending times.

Over the course of the operation, officers detained eight offenders, stopped a further five individuals, and recovered stolen goods. Reported shoplifting fell by 25% compared with the previous week — and when offences linked to those arrested are removed from the figures, the reduction rises to 75%.

Police say the results demonstrate the impact of close partnership working between local teams and businesses, helping protect staff, reassure customers and reduce crime in one of Acton’s busiest retail areas.

Local officers also used the operation to speak with shoppers and residents, many of whom expressed support for the visible policing presence and the focus on tackling persistent theft.

The latest action follows a series of targeted operations at the same store over the past year. In December, officers arrested and charged a man in connection with multiple thefts after residents raised concerns about rising shoplifting. Earlier in August, Safer Neighbourhood Teams from Southfield and Acton carried out a three-day operation after 24 incidents were reported in just three months, recovering stolen items and preventing further offences.

Police say community reporting continues to play a crucial role. Theft from local shops has a significant impact on businesses across London, and officers rely on timely reports to identify patterns, allocate patrols and intervene at the right moment.

A spokesperson for the Acton SNT said the latest results show what can be achieved when residents, retailers and police work together. “Local shops are at the heart of our community. When people report suspicious behaviour or thefts quickly, it helps us build a clear picture of when and where offenders operate — and that means we can be in the right place at the right time.”

Residents are encouraged to continue reporting suspicious activity via 101, online, or 999 in an emergency.
