Shock victory in the council election, bucking the national trend
Labour won 28 seats against the 27 secured by the Tories, following a long counting session, which involved two recounts. It means Labour will be set to lead a minority council.
The 2006 council result had seen the Conservatives just gain control from Labour, with 30 seats, against Labour's 27 and three Merton Park Residents.
The Merton Park Residents retained their seats and the Liberal Democrats also had reason to celebrate, winning the party’s first seats since 2005 with their two victories in West Barnes.
