A true feast of South Asian culture was on offer at Gunnersbury Park as the London Mela once again attracted huge crowds despite the changeable weather on the day

The London Mela is a one-day festival celebrating the rich tableau of South Asian culture and creativity from London, the UK and overseas.

It is one of the few melas in the country that commissions new work, provides a platform for emerging British artists, and brings traditional and classical art forms to a wider audience.

The Mela featured twelve zones, including contemporary and classical music and dance, street theatre, circus, cabaret, comedy, visual arts and spoken word, with something for people of all ages.

Highlights this year included Bollywood legend Usha Uthup headlining the main stage; the Legends of British Bhangra – Alaap, DCS and Malkit Singh – performing together for the first time; and award-winning singer songwriter Susheela Raman who delighted audiences with new songs form her forthcoming album.

The Deputy Mayor of Hounslow Mohammed Hussain Chaudhary joined thousands of revellers for the biggest celebration of South Asian culture in Europe at London’s 3rd annual Mela on Sunday.

Cllr Chaudhary said: “There was something for everyone at this year’s London Mela. As I walked around Gunnersbury Park I was thoroughly impressed by the variety and quality of the entertainment on offer."

Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone said: “The London Mela is a wonderful and hugely popular festival. It reflects the unity in our city and is an opportunity for everyone to celebrate the contribution that diverse Asian communities make to culture, life and business in London.”

The London Mela is produced in partnership between Hounslow Council and Ealing Council and is supported by the Mayor of London.
