Acton's fire service to be cut by half

Firefighters seek support in bid to halt cuts

Acton firefighters are asking for support from local people in their bid to fight cuts in Acton's fire service.

Proposals by The London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority include the loss of one of the two fire engines at Acton, as well as a reduction in the number of firefighters from 52 to 28.  The planned cuts mean that just one engine and seven firefighters will be available at any one time.

Within the last week alone, there were three incidents in Acton that needed more than one fire engine. In one case, two engines attended a serious fire in First Avenue and rescued five people. Acton's fire fighters believe that delays in response times would put lives at risk, if engines had to be called from neighbouring stations in future.

London Fire Brigade Deputy Commissioner, Roy Bishop, told Actonw3.com, "The London Fire Brigade serves the whole of London. We have used real incidents across London over the last five years to plan where our fire engines are needed most and our proposals to move one fire engine from Acton fire station are part of a plan to improve safety for London as a whole.  A fire engine would continue to reach incidents in the borough in under five minutes on average and a second fire engine would still arrive within eight minutes on over 80% of occasions".

LFEPA are consulting the public on their proposals and the consultation ends on February 7th.  If you would like to have your say as part of this consultation, then send your views to:
