Community is shocked by the death of Richard Mannington Bowes
Residents are paying tribute to the pensioner who stood up to marauding hooligans during riots on Monday night.
Richard Mannington Bowes, 68, of Haven Green died just before midnight on Thursday night after trying to stop a fire in Springbridge Road.
It reportedly took several days for police to identify him because rioters stole his wallet and other valuables while he lay unconscious on the pavement.
Flowers have been laid at the alleyway on Springbridge Road where he was found badly injured.
According to locals Mr Bowes was a reclusive who lived alone in a flat above Caffe Freddo's near Ealing Broadway.
One local neighbour, who didn't wish to be identified, was dressed in black and lay a single red rose this afternoon - clearly upset. She said: '' I'm just here because it's so dreadful and we are local and want to show our feelings.''
Peter Firstbrook, 60, who dragged Mr Mannington Bowes away from the violence is leading a campaign for a memorial to honour his bravery.
The Council has set up the Richard Mannington Bowes Relief Fund to help businesses and the community get back on its feet in the wake of the riots, and the Union flag was flown at half mast from Ealing Town Hall on Friday in his memory.
A 16 year old boy has been remanded in custody charged in connection with Mr Bowes murder - his 31 year old mother is accused of perverting the course of justice.
Detective Chief Inspector John McFarlane, of the Homicide and Serious Crime Command, investigating is still urging witnesses to come forward.
