Tories gain in London but Labour get most votes in Ealing
In the London Constituency the Conservatives got 27.4% of the overall vote up by just 0.6% The other two main parties saw their votes fall with Labour down by 3.5%
Big gainers were the Green Party who pipped UKIP to fourth place. Contrary to the trend seen elsewhere in the country UKIP saw their vote fall in London.
The number of seats being contested has fallen from 9 to 8. Party representation remainded the same as last time out apart from Labour having one less seat down to 2. Conservative still have 3 seats, Lib Dems 1, UKIP 1 and Green 1.
Turnout was 1,751,026 from an electorate of 5,257,624 which is almost exactly a third. This is an historical low but better than some were predicting.
London's representatives in the European Assembly are as follows:
The voting for Ealing Borough saw Labour maintain a slight lead over the Conservatives although their share of the vote has fallen sharply. The fall in the Labour vote corresponds to the gains made by Jan Jananayagam, an independent candidate from the Tamil community. The rise in the Conservative vote seems to correspond with the fall in the Liberal Democrat vote. The BNP made only small gains and UKIP saw a decline in their share of the vote.
There is no separate seat for the Ealing area. The votes in the borough are counted in the London-wide contest.
