The Liberal Democrats in Ealing have announced the three candidates that will be contesting Hanger Hill ward at local elections next year.

Two incumbents Athena Zissimos, Jonathan Oxley will be joined by local resident Mark Sanders in an attempt to be the councillors for the ward which stretches from the east of Ealing Broadway station to West Acton and an area north of the A40 Western Avenue.

The ward is currently split with the Conservatives with Fabio Conti holding the other seat. The Liberal Democrats took a second seat last October after Gregory Stafford stood down following his election to parliament. Jonathan Oxley was elected councillor receiving half of the votes cast.

In 2022, Cllr Zissimos was the first non-Tory candidate to be elected to the ward this century in what had previously been one of the Conservative’s safest seats in the borough.

The last elections saw the Lib Dems established as the main opposition with seven councillors. The Conservatives were reduced to four with Cllr Conti their only representative outside Ealing Broadway ward. However, the Liberal Democrats will need to make widespread gains across the borough to take control of the administration with Labour currently holding 59 seats.

Cllr Zissimos said, “I feel very privileged to have been selected once again to stand in Hanger Hill for the Liberal Democrats in the local elections next year. I have enjoyed being a Councillor very much and feel I have done lots of good things to help the residents of Hanger Hill. If I am re-elected for the residents of Ealing I will continue to work hard.”

Hanger Hill Councillor Jonathan Oxley said, “I’m delighted to be selected as the Lib Dem candidate for the Hanger Hill ward. Since the by-election where I became a Councillor, the Tories are a busted flush. Only the Liberal Democrats can take the fight to Ealing’s useless Labour Council.”

Mark Sanders, the third Hanger Hill Council Candidate said, “It’s a great pleasure to be nominated as the Liberal Democrat candidate for Hanger Hill again after living In Ealing for 21 years. It is time for more financial scrutiny of the ruling Labour party and how they run the Council.”
