Residents of Ealing and Acton will join up to six million Londoners in the election to decide who will be the Mayor of London and the members of the London Assembly.

The polls and the bookies both indicate that Sadiq Khan is likely to remain as Mayor but there are a range of possible outcomes for the Assembly elections.

Borough residents vote in the Ealing & Hillingdon constituency which combines the two London boroughs. Labour’s Onkar Sahota is widely expected to win with the bookies not offering odds on a Labour defeat and sources in the local Conservative party conceding that their candidate, Ealing councillor Gregory Stafford would be a surprising winner.

Both seats have elected a full slate of Conservative councillors in the last few elections.

Meanwhile, campaigning is also underway to replace late councillor Anna Tomlinson for Hobbayne ward, after she died in June 2020.

Paying tribute to her last year, council leader Julian Bell said: “Anna was a joy to know, a really kind and gentle woman, and a good friend to all. Anna will be deeply missed by all of us who worked alongside her. She gave her time and experience to this community, which she loved.”

The ward did elect a Conservative councillor in 2010 but all three seats were held by Labour with a big majority at the last election.

For the Mayoral election there are 20 candidates standing hoping to unseat the incumbent Sadiq Khan.

The Mayor of London is elected using the Supplementary Vote system. You make a first and second choice when you vote.

If no candidate gets more than 50% of the first choice votes, all except the top 2 candidates are eliminated. If your first choice candidate is eliminated, and your second choice is for one of the top 2, your second choice is counted.

The results are likely to be declared either on Saturday 8 May or Sunday 9 May with the latter understood to be the more likely due to the number of candidates standing for Mayor and the need to be Covid-secure when making the count.
