Blaze resulted in the closure of the A40 during morning rush hour

Firefighters tackle the fire on Western Avenue

A serious fire at a house on Western Avenue resulted in the closure of the A40 this Wednesday morning (17 February).

Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters were called to the blaze in Acton. Local people were advised to close their windows and doors due to smoke in the area.

The Brigade's 999 Control Officers took 13 calls to the blaze.

The A40 was closed going into London from Hanger Lane resulting in a significant amount of congestion across west London

The roof of a mid-terrace house was destroyed and most of the first floor and half of the ground floor were damaged by fire. Part of the loft conversion of an adjacent property was also damaged by the blaze. There were no reports of any injuries.

Station Commander Lucy Macleod-Cook, who was at the scene, said, "Firefighters worked quickly to bring the fire, which was located in the loft space of a house, under control.

"Crews are expected to remain on scene for a number of hours damping down.

"The A40 is closed going into London from the A406 at Hanger Lane. We urge people to avoid the area and use an alternative route.

The Brigade was called at 8:05am and the fire was under control by 9:57am. Fire crews from Park Royal, Wembley, Acton and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
