Any Ealing borough resident over the age of 18 is now able to get their first Covid-19 jab.

Vaccines will be available on a no appointment, walk-in basis to anyone adult at the Dominion Centre in Southall. The facility will be open on Friday, 18 June and Saturday, 19 June from 9am – 6pm at the shopping centre at 112 The Green, Southall, UB2 4BQ.

This is part of efforts to tackle the prevalence of the Delta Variant of Concern (VOC), a more transmissible strain of the virus.

Cases of the new VOC have increased rapidly in the last two weeks. Early cases were mainly related to travel, but there are now more community transmission, with a relatively high proportion in children and young people.

The council says there is no evidence that this strain causes more severe disease or that the vaccines are not effective.

The council is also working with the local NHS to put on more pop-up events within the borough.

There are also permanent centres in the borough that residents in the eligible categories should book an appointment to as soon as they can. Residents that are waiting to get their vaccine are reminded to check the NHS website regularly to see if they are eligible and to book their vaccine as soon as they can.

Targeted testing of students, staff and families at a primary school where there had been a few children identified with the VOC has already taken place. Over 1,000 people were tested and the results are awaited.

If you are displaying symptoms, you should get a PCR test and stay at home immediately. Find out where to get tested if you have symptoms.

If you are not displaying symptoms, you can still get a PCR test at enhanced testing facilities and those that want a rapid test that gives results within 30 minutes will be offered one after their PCR test. Find out where to get tested if you do not have symptoms.

Along with other North West London boroughs, Ealing has been implementing a comprehensive plan to support a 4-week period of intensified activity to help reduce the community spread of covid, including this new VOC since Monday, 24 May.

Articles such as the one above are integral to what we do. We aim to feature as much as possible on local societies, charities based in the area, fundraising efforts by residents, community-based initiatives and even helping people find missing pets.
