New pedal power for Ealing’s cyclists (PR 1291)
There is good news for Ealing’s cyclists after the Council’s Cabinet approved a raft of new measures to make cycling in the borough easier and safer.
New off-road routes will be opened up through parks and recreation grounds, as part of the Greenways Programme. Ealing Council secured more than £100,000 from Transport for London (TfL) for the project, which will get underway before the end of this financial year. Routes to benefit include Dabbs Hill Lane, Southfield Recreation Ground, Glade Lane, Bridge Avenue to Ruislip Road East and Trinity Way open space.
It will also be easier for people to park bikes in the borough with more than 50 new cycle stands due to be installed by the Council in 2008/09
And there are plans to make many of the boroughs roads safer for cyclists and pedestrians alike.
Consultation will soon be carried out on a major scheme to improve the safety and appearance of South Ealing Road from the junction with Church Lane to the border with Hounslow.
Proposals include overrun areas to make it safer for drivers to overtake cyclists, bus-friendly speed tables with pedestrian crossings on them, inset parking bays, and built-out kerbs to make crossing safer for pedestrians. Together the measures should prevent drivers from exceeding the speed limit, improving safety for all road users, without disrupting the flow of traffic.
There are also proposals for road safety improvements at the following locations:
- Horsenden Lane South
- both ends of Kent Avenue
- the junction of Argyle Road and the Avenue
- Uxbridge Road around the junction with Twyford Avenue
- the junction of Gunnersbury Lane and Uxbridge Road
Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Transport, Councillor David Millican, said: “Cycling is great because it reduces congestion, helps people to stay fit and is environmentally friendly. As a cyclist myself I’m really delighted that we have so much planned over the next year to make getting around the borough on a bike easier and safer.”
The Cabinet decision is subject to call-in for a period of five working days from the date of publication of the minutes of the meeting.
