English Heritage Slates The Leaf

As consultation deadline extension is announced

English heritage has 'strongly objected' to Ealing Broadway's Arcadia 'Leaf' redevelopment proposals.

The government's statutory adviser on the historic environment has advised Glenkerrin of its objections to the proposal, saying in a statement that it had made its decision 'on the grounds of its inappropriate scale, lack of contextual relation to the established character of the immediate area, its impact upon the wider historic environment, (particularly in relation to the setting of listed buildings and the character and appearance of conservation areas,) and the detrimental impact that would be imposed upon the established sense of place in Ealing'.

The statement continues: 'The proposed development does not meet all of the criteria in the London Plan, or in CABE/EH guidance on tall buildings.

'As such, the local authority are advised to recommend refusal for planning permission, and refusal of conservation area consent for the demolition of buildings on the site in the absence of an appropriate scheme for redevelopment.'

Glenkerrin have already submitted amendments to their original proposal, sparking a new deadline for the public consultation.

A letter which went out to residents in Ealing, Acton and West Ealing on New Year's Eve gives the new closing date for the revised Arcadia Centre plans as Friday, January 25.

The developers put in the revised proposals for the site following a report by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment in November, which also recommended changes to the scheme.

The main tower on the site, The Leaf, has been rotated 25 degrees to the left meaning that the main archway under the building would now face Villiers House, next to Ealing Broadway station.

The order of the three finger blocks on the site, which will look on to Haven Green, has also been changed, so the tallest is now in the middle of the trio.

Details of the planning application are available to view at the Council’s Perceval House offices, Uxbridge Road, Ealing or online and in borough libraries.

The Council is keen to hear the views of people who live in, work in or shop in the borough as the centre of Ealing is important to the whole community. The planning application will be considered by the Council in early 2008.
