The Ealing Chess Club (ECC) is currently offering a year’s free membership to women thanks to a grant given by the English Chess Federation.

New players joining before 31 May 2024 will pay no membership fees as part of a drive to increase female participation in the sport.

ECC sees itself as a very inclusive club already but would still like to boost its female membership even further. It already has a member who plays for the England Women’s Chess Team in international events and it runs a programme of chess tutoring for juniors which has an equal mix of boys and girls.

The club says that Ealing Central and Acton’s MP, Dr Rupa Huq, is also very supportive of ECC’s actions in promoting women’s chess.

ECC meets every Monday evening (excluding Bank Holidays) from 7:30pm and its members cover the full spectrum of playing ability. The club is anxious to stress that you should not be discouraged if you believe that you are not a strong enough chess player to join a chess club – you will always find games against players of similar strength to yourself. Games at the club can either be friendlies or rated games. By playing rated games, you will acquire an English Chess Federation rating and will be able to follow how your game is improving.

By joining ECC, you will be given the opportunity to play league chess, play in internal tournaments (both classic chess and lightning chess), and to attend chess talks by invited speakers. Or you can just come along to play friendlies in a relaxed atmosphere.

ECC is a member of Actonians Sport Club and meets at their large bar which is reserved exclusively for the club’s use on Monday evenings. The club claims this is probably the most comfortable chess venue in London. There is parking at the venue. The club is also well served by public transport being just an 8-minute walk from Acton Town Tube (the closest Tube station on the District and Piccadilly line) and on the route of the E3 bus.

If you would like more information or would like to come along to the club without any obligation to join, contact ECC’s Secretary, Neville Rowden, at secretary.ealing.chess.club@gmail.com.

Articles such as the one above are integral to what we do. We aim to feature as much as possible on local societies, charities based in the area, fundraising efforts by residents, community-based initiatives and even helping people find missing pets.
