Registration is now open for a free chess tournament for secondary school students later this year.

It is to be held on Sunday 3 December at the Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls, and there will be an equal number of female and male chess players taking part.

All students who attend secondary schools in the borough of Ealing will be welcome to sign-up. In the event of an over-subscription to the tournament, the priority will be given to students from state schools. The sign-up form is available here https://forms.gle/SJBKenCKd9dyhadN6 and the deadline to enter is Friday 17 November.

In addition, on the same day there will be two simultaneous chess demonstrations against two national women's champions. To play in this simultaneous chess event is by invitation only but spectators are allowed to watch.

The event follows on from the first Flagship 'She Plays To Win' (SPTW) girls’ chess tournament which was also held at Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls on Sunday 25 June.

SPTW is a chess charity founded by Mr D'Costa (International Master and England Women's International team coach) to promote chess among girls.

Over 100 girls from primary school to university graduates took part in the free to enter event. 16 female chess players represented the Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls in the Secondary School category and four girls went into the third round of tie-breaks to fight for fifth place.

Ealing Central and Acton MP, Dr Rupa Huq, was impressed by how hard the girls fought in each round praising them in her speech and afterwards she handed out the prizes to the winners. Special mention was given to Dr Neville Rowden (Secretary of the Ealing Chess Club) and Mr Harry Symeonidis (Ealing Chess Club) for assisting the tournament and they were credited with the smooth running of the event.

The Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls is a state non-selective secondary girls’ school and this term it has been working closely with Chess in Schools and Communities to provide free weekly after school chess coaching sessions to students who are attending the school. It will continue to work with Mr D'Costa to host more free chess tournaments to encourage more girls to get involved in playing chess.

You can also get play chess in the local area by joining the Ealing Chess Club which meets every Monday evening at Actonians Sports Club.

Ellen Wilkinson School is on Queen's Drive (W3 0HW).
