Diarmuid Gavin launches Big Bites, Little Bites
Big Bites, Little Bites, a collection of 81 recipes and photographs produced by parents at St. Saviour’s and Christ Church CE Schools in Ealing, has been endorsed by celebrity TV gardener Diarmuid Gavin.
In his introduction, Gavin extols the joy for children to grow, eat and cook their own food.
“In days gone by it was our grandparents who used teach us how to garden, but we have lost that skill,” says Gavin. He says getting children to cook their own food brings them an awareness of where food comes from and how important it is to eat well.
Big Bites, Little Bites covers all meals from breakfasts and lunches, to family main meals, baking and pudding.
The book also celebrates the cultural diversity of St. Saviours and Christ Church Schools, with recipes from Canada, Sweden, NZ, Germany, Mexico, India, Italy, Australia, Afghanistan and others.
Some of the recipes include a healthy full english breakfast from school meals’ provider Harrisons Catering Services, Canadian Savoy eggs, Blue noodles, Rainbow pasta & Mexican Chimichangas, Headteacher’s Carrot cake, Savory Cheese Muffins & Welsh Bara Brith,
The aim was to produce a cookbook that was easy to use, with recipes that appealed to all ages within the family.
The production of the cookbook is the start of a number of events and activities taking place at the two schools to encourage a Healthy Eating Campaign. St. Saviour’s CE Infant and Primary School has also started a scheme to sell organic fruit and veg through the London-wide ‘Farmers’ Choice’ Scheme. The children have also been busy learning about planting and growing vegetables and fruits.
Copies of the book will be sold to raise funds for the Healthy Eating Campaign. The cost is £10 for the 80 page glossy book, full of recipes, healthy eating tips and photos. All proceeds from the book will be used to fund activities by the Parents’ Association at both schools.
