Fundraising efforts for victims of the Japanese earthquake

A local mum of four is trying to get Acton and Ealing children to make paper cranes to raise funds for the victims of the Japanese earthquake.

Tanya Iguichi, whose children attend the Japanese School in West Acton, has sent out the following appeal to headteachers and anyone who would like to participate.

"As you may know, West Acton is the home of the largest community in London. Japanese people in the area are deeply shocked by the tragic events that have been unfolding in Japan. They feel the need to help in any way that they can, which is why I am writing to see if you can help.

As we speak, parents from the Japanese School, which is now on its spring break, are trying to contact each other. They are getting their children to make crane (birds) from origami. These will be taken to various sports clubs in the local area this weekend. Children taking part in sporting events this weekend will be asked wear the paper cranes and, if possible, to give a donation to the Japanese earthquake fund.

This movement has started this week in Japan via Facebook to raise funds for the victims. This is the story behind it:

There was a young girl who was badly affected by the radiation from the atom bombs in Japan at the end of the Second World War. As she lay in her hospital bed, she decided to make 1000 origami cranes. The crane in Japan is a symbol of hope and she wanted to give hope to all the victims of the atom bombs in Japan. She died after making her 900th crane." 

We wondered if you could get your children to make paper cranes and allocate a day where the students wear them and are encouraged to make a donation to the Japanese earthquake fund. It could possibly done in a similar way to wearing poppies on Remembrance Day. The link below shows how to make them:

Several children from the Japanese school are making paper cranes, which they have been asked to deposit in Yoyo Kitchen by the end of tomorrow. The idea, over the weekend, is to get children from local sports clubs to wear the paper cranes and, if they wish, make a donation to help people in Japan.

The friendly matches between London Japanese Junior FC and Acton and Ealing Whistlers FC will take place at Acton Yochien, Queens Drive Playing Field, Queens Drive, London W3 0HT on Sunday 20th March at around 11 am.
