Local Schools Get Ofsted Praise For Good Performance

Five schools in the borough are in the top 200 across the UK

Five local secondary schools have been placed in the top 200 across the UK in a GCSE ranking by Ofsted. Primary schools in the borough have also been found to be performing well.

St Mark’s Catholic School, The Heathland School, Gunnersbury Catholic School, Lampton Academy and the Green School have been praised for their performances in the GCSE Progress 8, giving them the ranking in the top 200 out of 3092 schools.

Ofsted inspectors have judged 96 per cent of all Hounslow schools as good or outstanding, up from 74 per cent in May 2014. Of the borough’s special schools inspected, they were found to be good or better, up from 80 per cent in May 2014.

For Primary schools in Hounslow, performance levels at Key Stage 1 were better than London and national for the percentage of children achieving the expected standard in reading, writing and mathematics. With Key Stage 2 performance levels also reaching the expected standards.

There was also good news in the private, voluntary and independent childcare settings, as Ofsted have inspected and currently judged them all as good or outstanding. Educational standards also continue to rise.

Under the government’s new assessment framework at Key Stage 1 and 2 this year, Hounslow performed better than the national average for the percentage of children achieving the expected standards in reading, writing and mathematics, placing the borough in the top 10 per cent of local authorities.

At GCSE, Progress 8 performance has placed the Council in the top 10 out of 151 local authorities. This means that students in Hounslow have made more progress in 8 GCSE subjects than those pupils with similar prior attainments from Key Stage 2 across all schools in England.

Councillor Tom Bruce, Cabinet Member for Education and Children’s Services, Hounslow Council, said: “I am delighted to have been able to announce the fantastic achievement of our schools, and the wonderful work they are doing with children and young people in Hounslow.

“The outcome of recent Ofsted reports in the borough is something everyone should be proud of. A big thank you to all our schools, teachers, parents and guardians, governors and pupils.

“Learning in a safe and happy environment is critical to all our children reaching their potential and achieving their academic and vocational goals.

"Despite the mounting pressure on schools budgets, and central government’s reluctance to fully address this, we have made it our absolute priority in Hounslow to invest in education for our local children so they have the best start in life.

“These Ofsted reports and assessments of pupils’ development show that our schools are helping to provide brighter futures for our children and give them the best of opportunities.”

The performance of some of the borough’s schools in GCSE Progress 8, has placed them among the top 200 schools in England, out of 3092 secondary schools nationally.

These include St Mark’s Catholic School, The Heathland School, Gunnersbury Catholic School, Lampton Academy and the Green School.

“These achievements do not come easily, and government funding cuts means retaining these standards is at risk.”
