Local MP Calls On Women To Take Start-Up Challenge

Mary Macleod organised seminar to help women become entrepreneurs

There was a good turnout of local businesswomen and would-be entrepreneurs at a 'Set Up Your Own Business' seminar sponsored by EMC at their Tower Headquarters in Brentford on Friday (18th October). This was the third in a series of seminars organised by local MP Mary Macleod for the benefit of women in the area.

Local entrepreneurs Angie Lyons-Redman, founder of MyPlumber Ltd and Shavata Singh, founder of Shavata Brow Studio, both told their stories of how they rose to meet the challenges they faced on their way to creating successful businesses.

Mary said: ‘I am a passionate believer in women in business and was honoured to see so many women at last week’s event coming from a wide variety of ages and backgrounds. It is clear that we have a growing number of potential female entrepreneurs out there in the local area and I want to do everything I can to encourage them. It’s not just about getting more women to set up a business – it’s about making sure they are the right businesses and that they will grow and prosper.’

Speakers from StartUp Britain, Lloyds Bank and Brentford Chamber of Commerce also provided insight into setting up a business and the support and finance available to entrepreneurs.

Mary added:‘Both Angie and Shavata provide brilliant examples of local women who have takenOctober 25, 2013t can be a daunting process, so events like this help to share their knowledge and build the networks that are key in future success stories. If women set up their own businesses at the same rate as they do in the United States, we would have an extra £42 billion flowing into the economy and this is something we should therefore encourage. Enterprising women are important to building economic growth in Britain and I will continue to do whatever I can to help them.’
