Be creative and capture the best of the capital
The Mayor, Boris Johnson, is calling on all Londoners to put on their creative thinking caps for the My London in a Box project. The idea is to capture this amazing city and how Londoners feel about and relate to it in a miniature work of art which is personal, unique and reflects the innovation and forward thinking nature of the capital.
The project is part of the Mayor’s Story of London festival taking place in October and celebrating London’s rich and varied history as a place of innovation and ideas. The Story of London also looks into the future to see how London will develop and change as it faces the challenges of the 21st century and beyond.
Londoners are being encouraged to collect a box provided by their local Big Yellow Storage Company and some council offices and place items in it to create a box of ideas about the future of London. Once submitted, the cardboard box will be photographed to appear on the mylondoninabox website and will go on display in November at a special venue that will be announced at the end of October.
The idea for encapsulating London and Londoners’ thoughts, feelings and ideas about their city in a box was the brainchild of Robin Hutchinson, founder of art and community engagement project, Community Brain. It was successfully piloted in Kingston in 2009 and is being rolled out across the capital during this year’s Story of London festival.
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said:
‘London has always been a city of ideas, inspiration, invention and innovation. I want Londoners to really fire up their imagination and re-create the magic of London in a box. The box might include photographs, drawings, maps, a poem or something really quirky and unique. It can portray any aspect of the city from its musical heritage, arts and culture, buildings and technology to your neighbourhood, family or your favourite place. Whatever it is, get a box and let everyone know what your city means to you. Let your imagination run wild and don’t be boxed in!’
Robin Hutchinson, the originator of My London in a Box, said:
‘The capital has always been rich in creativity and we hope that people of all ages right across London will take this opportunity to create their own personal vision of London. Culture and creativity are a driving force in the success of our city and we want to celebrate that now and in the future’.
