Calls for better technology to help residents report and get follow-up on incidents

Ealing Liberal Democrats are urging the police develop a more efficient system for reporting and following up on crime.

Social media pages are now often busy with witness reports of offences that are shared locally and the Owl system is an online neighbourhood watch which also sends out alerts.

Liberal Democrats have conducted a crime survey to listen to residents’ views and hear what police action they want to try and reduce crime and the fear of crime.

They say issues raised include an increase in fear over violent crime including knives and guns. Residents have said it is often tricky to report non-emergency crimes online due to time in processing a technology failures. Many residents want to find out the outcome when crimes are reported and want to report crimes or incidents on the move and believe an app would help this.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Gary Malcolm said:

"Liberal Democrats are suggesting that the Met in conjunction with a tech company can set up an app which will allow none emergency crimes to be reported which will also give updates when crimes have been solved. Also it would be possible for people to see the types of crimes that are more common in their area. Also it could be used to prompt people to not leave belongings in their vehicles in view or for reminders to shut windows in the summer.”
