Ealing Residents and Workers Recogised in New Year Honours


Women dominate the awards list locally

Congratulations are in order to the Ealing women and men recognised in the 2018 New Years honours list.

It's the second award for West Ealing resident Professor Diane Coyle, who is professor of economics in the school of social science at the University of Manchester.

In 2009 she was recognised with an OBE, this time she gets a CBE '' For services to Economics and the Public Understanding of Economics''

Proud husband BBC Technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones tweeted the happy news: '' V proud of @DianeCoyle1859 who has been made a CBE in the New Year's Honours.''

Marcella Phelan

Assistant Director of Children's Services at Ealing Council, Marcella Phelan, has been given an MBE for her services and was congratulated by MP Rupa Huq, she responded '' Thank you Rupa! So proud of all we've achieved for young people @ealingcouncil especially our outstanding care leavers and very excited about the MBE!!!

Deputy Leader of Ealing Council Councillor Ranjit Dheer, who is the longest-serving deputy leader of the council in the UK, having been first elected to this post in 2005 has received an OBE for his work. Dheer was first elected as a councillor in Ealing in 1982 and has won eight local government elections in the past 35 years.

Sarah Jarvis

Ealing resident Dr Sarah Jarvis,who is a GP in Shepherd's Bush and a regular writer/broadcaster on health issues, (The One Show, and Jeremy Vine Show) receives an OBE for services to General Practice and Public Understanding of Health .

Sister Mary Joy

Sister Mary-Joy Langdon has been recognised for her services to disabled and disadvantaged children. In 1989 she set up the Wormwood Scrubs Pony Centre in London, the very first major stable for disabled riders. Since then her riding therapy has helped disabled children build confidence, address fear and acquire balance and other skills.

In total 1,123 people have received an award:

981 candidates have been selected at BEM, MBE and OBE level: 318 at BEM, 452 at MBE and 211 at OBE

70% of the recipients are people who have undertaken outstanding work in their communities either in a voluntary or paid capacity

551 women are recognised in the List, representing 49% of the total

9.2% of the successful candidates come from a BAME background

5% of the successful candidates consider themselves to have a disability (under the Equality Act 2010)
