A new sci-fi themed exhibition is set to launch this Friday (20 October) at the Gunnersbury Park Museum.

A dalek was spotted this week in the courtyard in front of the Large Mansion as preparations were made for the displays which celebrate sci-fi on screen and its links to west London.

A crowdfunding campaign was used to gather the necessary funds for ‘Set to Stun: Designing & Filming Sci-Fi in West London’ which will be free for the public to enter. The campaign with Art Fund’s Art Happens, raised over £16,000 from community donations.

It will give a behind the scenes look at the creative connections between this area and sci-fi in film and television which go back nearly a century. You can find out about the local workshops and design studios that have helped bring some of the most iconic sci-fi films and TV shows to life.

From laser beams to paranoid androids, exploring faraway planets to alien invasions – there is an interactive showcase of the sets, costumes, prosthetics, props, and artistic visualisations that went into British Sci-Fi classics, including Doctor Who, the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Red Dwarf.

The exhibition aims to cater both to sci-fi enthusiasts with informative and engaging content as well as providing a fun element for family groups, with workshops for both adults and kids.

It is the first major exhibition Gunnersbury Park Museum has held since gaining National Portfolio Organisations (NPO) status last year.

Professor James Knowles, Chair of the Gunnersbury Museum and Park Development Trust said, "Science fiction on screen has thrilled audiences for 100 years. West London has played an essential part in creating these iconic stories, characters and worlds, and we’re delighted to tell its story in our most ambitious exhibition to date. We can’t wait to welcome you to Set to Stun’

The exhibition is free to enter, and is open Tuesday – Sunday, 10am – 4.30pm.
