The achievements of young black people in the borough of Ealing are to be celebrated in an awards ceremony.

Hosted by the Descendants, a history and arts-focused organisation aimed at children and young people , The Dr John Roberts CBE Q.C Achievement Awards ceremony was established in 2005, by Descendants founder Margaret Noel to highlight the successes of young people of African and African-Caribbean descent. The events looks to challenge negative media reporting about educational attainment by this group, in particular African-Caribbean boys.

This year there will be an entrepreneurial award in memory of the late Jamal Edwards MBE

The awards ceremony takes place at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Ealing (W5 3HN) on Saturday 2 July at 6.00pm (doors open at 5.30pm). As well as the awards ceremony there will be live entertainment and a 3 course meal. Tickets cost £35 for adults or £15 for under 13s.

As well as getting a taste of the work and achievements of the nominees during the ceremony, the audience will also hear the stories of success, perseverance and raw talent of the students who attend.

Descendants says, “These are the stories that we celebrate on the night, not only to acknowledge the unquestionably outstanding achievements, but also to celebrate the sheer potential of these young people: our future leaders, doctors, scientists, record breaking athletes, inspiring poets, painters, teachers, pilots and activists just to name a few!

“These Awards stand as a reminder that regardless of what negativity might see in the media or on graffitied walls, with our own strong foundations and those of our community it's not only possible to achieve our dreams but to exceed far beyond them.”

The criteria for nominations are as follows:

1. Students who excel in all areas of their education.
