The Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls is an 11-19 comprehensive foundation school. It is very popular and heavily oversubscribed. The latest OFSTED report (2006) describes it as a good school with several excellent features. The report praises it as a caring community which prides itself on encouraging high academic expectations amongst its pupils. The teachers are described as enthusiastic and knowledgeable and the pupils as well-motivated. The care and guidance given to sixth formers is particularly praised. Its success is recognised in its status as a Beacon School.

In 2005 there were 1411 pupils aged 11-19, of these 363 pupils were in the sixth form. A double the national average of pupils are eligible for Free School Meals. Students are admitted from over 60 feeder primary schools. Around 84% of pupils are from minority ethnic groups with the largest number from a middle eastern background.
