Families in Chiswick living with dementia will now be able to access specialist nursing support in their own homes, following the appointment of a full-time Admiral Nurse at Home Instead Hammersmith & Chiswick.
The move responds to what the Alzheimer’s Society describes as a significant gap in dementia training across the care sector. Their latest report highlights that many care professionals receive only limited dementia-specific training, with some programmes offering as little as one to two hours, despite supporting people with complex and progressive conditions.
Dementia is one of the UK’s most pressing health challenges, affecting not only those diagnosed but also the families who support them every day. Yet access to specialist guidance within the home — where most care is delivered — remains limited.
Home Instead Hammersmith & Chiswick — a local provider rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission — has appointed Dr Jane Pritchard, one of the UK’s most experienced dementia specialists, as its full-time Admiral Nurse. The role has been developed in partnership with Home Instead and the national charity Dementia UK.
Admiral Nurses are specialist dementia nurses who support families from diagnosis through to end of life — providing dementia expertise, practical advice, and emotional support. They are typically based in hospitals, hospices, or memory services. Access to this level of expertise within a home care setting is rare.
This means families across West London can now receive specialist dementia nursing support at home — helping them manage symptoms, navigate complex decisions, and maintain quality of life in familiar surroundings.
Dr Pritchard holds a doctorate from the University of Southampton on dementia care and brings extensive experience across both hospital and community settings. She is also a Care Quality Commission Specialist Advisor and has been recognised nationally for her contribution to dementia care.
For nearly fifteen years, Home Instead Hammersmith & Chiswick has invested in dementia care well beyond standard requirements. Most of the office team are themselves experienced nurses and healthcare professionals, extensively trained in partnership with the University of Bradford, one of the UK’s leading centres for dementia care education.
Maddy Alemayehu RGN, Founder of Home Instead Hammersmith & Chiswick, said:
“Families are often left to cope with dementia without access to the level of specialist support they need. Our aim is to change that — bringing advanced clinical expertise into the home, where people feel most comfortable and where care has the greatest impact.”
Home Instead Hammersmith & Chiswick is rated ‘Outstanding’ in three of five areas by the Care Quality Commission, placing it among the top-performing providers in England. Inspectors noted that the service delivers “safe, kind and personalised care”, with staff who are “well-trained and responsive to people’s individual needs.”
Dementia can be overwhelming — but families do not have to navigate it alone.
