Starbucks shuts outlet by the Oaks

There is a notice up saying it shut this weekend - didn't see anything ahead of time although it closed a number of other stores last month in London.Very pleased to see it go to be frank. Terrible coffee and poor corporate practices. There are at least a dozen good independent venues within a short walk who sell much better coffee - ActOne cinema for example.

I think it’s called the Hotelling principle… long lost economics lectures about why similar outlets cluster together. Apparently it makes excellent business sense… as seen by ice-cream shops on a beach or the old division in medieval city streets: bread street, fish lane and the like.

More than a year, I think, but not long. Same thing happened in West Ealing where Starbucks moved in a couple of doors from Costa before the pandemic then were gone. They are virtually next door to each other in Ealing Common and West Hampstead. Odd!

It was less than a year wasn’t it?So many good coffee shopsAnd enough mediocre chains that it can’t matter. And won’t be missed. Only worry is that empty spaces worse for the town than full ones.

That didn't last long! Hope it won't mean another empty unit. The way things are going it'll probably be a tutorial place.
