Civic Mass and Crayle Sermon
The Crayle Sermon is preached at St Mary’s Acton every year, during the the annual Civic Service attended by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Mayor, MP, Councillors and other dignitaries. This year, the service is taking place on Sunday the 4th of February, at 10.30am and the preacher will be The Revd Prebendary Joseph Fernandes, Rector of the Acton Parish. The origins of the Sermon go back to the 1700s when Sarah Crayle and her daughter Ann Crayle made bequests to the parish of Acton for gifts to the poor, including clothes and coal. The Rector was given an annual sum to preach a sermon on their birthdays and mention their names. In modern times, the preacher of the Crayle Sermon is now presented with a symbolic payment. The remainder of the Crayle bequests are held, with other ancient bequests, and distributed by the Acton (Middlesex) Charities.
