20mph - any enforcement

Now I've adjusted to the 20mph limit in Ealing I'm all for it but I do wonder if there is any actual enforcement of it?Someone once told me they are not actually legal, councils have just put up 20mph signs and hope for the best.Once again I've been overtaken on the stretch between the A40 and Horn Lane, its short, narrow, frequently has pedestrians and workmen in the road and I've lost count of how many times cars come racing off the A40, find me trundling along at the 20mph limit then overtake in the very short space. 10 minutes later the same thing happened again on Madeley Road in Ealing.Strikes me that these limits are creating a lot of dangerous over taking. Anyone else seen this?

No Cash Cows to be milked in the demographics you mention Maria........ so will never happen.Same reason cyclists and e-scooters are allowed to threaten pedestrian safety on footpaths daily with impunity.

Maybe we should go back to the old days of the Green Cross Code and teach children how to cross roads safely.We should also fine people for walking into the road anywhere they like while listening to loud music while looking at their mobiles. We need to stop punishing innocent drivers and put more responsibility on individuals.

I'm not sure as to the answer to the original question. There was a trial in Wandsworth borough of 20mph camera enforcement but this was cancelled when the DVLA started to refuse to provide information on ownership. On the Chiswick forum there is some discussion which says there are fines being given out on the Ealing Road but it's not clear why this enforcement is allowable and the Wandsworth one isn't.

You may be averaging 17-18mph but that includes times when you're not moving at traffic lights etc. If the maximum speed you can travel is 20 rather than 30, then it will reduce your average journey speed and thus increase the time taken.

I seriously doubt that it increases journey times. I have a computer in the car and my average speed in this part of London, long before these new limits came in, was about 17-18 mph.

A friend of mine got done for doing 27mph on Horn Lane but very few roads have cameras. I observe the speed limit and am sick of being tail-gated and bullied by drivers who don't want to.

My husband was aught doing the dangerous(!) speed of 24mph on a three-lane stretch of the Uxbridge Road near the Iron Bridge.I'm all for the 20 limit on side roads, but on a major highway it seems over prescriptive - 30 being more realistic.It's also quite difficult to stick to 20mph on some major roads and having to constantly check one's speedometer makes it more dangerous because of the lack of attention to the road.

Won't Councils get pi$$ed off? I mean, if it's Plod's job to enforce, Councils don't get any of that lubbly jubbly Fine Monies do they?

20 mph speed limits are enforceable as any other speed limit, but is is a job for the police not councils. I have seen a couple of police units in central London using hand held speed guns, but I'd guess they generally have better things to do such as trying to stop people carrying knives. It's just a stupid limit. There is no convincing evidence it reduces deaths and injuries, but it increases journey times and probably pollutions as vehicles at 20mph will have higher emissions per mile than at 30 mph. It's just another knee jerk anti car measure.
