Gambling shops

I'd be interested in your views on gambling on the High Street. A fourth gambling establishment ,a casino opened a few weeks ago and seems to have extended hours. The fifth is a betting shop on Churchfield Road. Do you have an opinion on the proliferation of these establishments?

From what I can see and hear, many people of all parties and none are aware of this escalation. We will just have to see what can be done. Lets make this a popular cause. Unlikely its just happening to us.

Yes I too was disappointed to see yet another gambling place on the High Street.Imagine there is some way to know in advance so at least you can object or voice an opinion...but have never seen anything.

That's an interesting question. These establishments would not stay in business if there weren't the customers. Who are the customers? I don't think I count.

There's indeed a growing number of gambling places in Acton's High Street, making me wonder about its direction.Many shopkeepers say they're struggling. Online shopping hits hard, and they find rent tough with fewer customers walking in.Acton's different from Chiswick or Ealing because of its mix of people. But Ealing Council needs to step up. Too many similar shops are popping up. They should help with rents and support new businesses. Our spot is good; we just need the right shops. How can the council help?

Thank you Peter. That could well be true but I'm told the same thing is happening in other Boroughs. Ealing might consider an joint approach. If we don't ask, we don't receive etc.

I suspect that, while the local authority issues the premises licence for gambling locations, they’re bound by guidance from the Gambling Commission which limits their room for manoeuvre, such that I’m not sure ‘we think there are too many already’ is a permitted factor.

We are hoping to ask a question at Full Council in September and want to be confident we are not talking through our hats. So keep offering your views please. I'm known for the occasional bet on the Grand National and so on, so no objection to the odd betting shop or casino from meThe concern is the increased numbers of establishments and the late hours they open.They are licensed (and taxed) by the Gaming Board, so that is not Ealing's business. But we know the Lead Councillor has informally expressed her own concern. The question to Council is just to start the ball rolling in Acton. This will be a cross party issue I'm told. Possibly other agencies will join too. Most important is the views of individual residents, young and old. Keep talking.

I'm not sure anything can be done, we all know how LBE would react even if they received a Petition signed by thousands.And we elect Councillors to represent US and our wishes?! 😂I think most would agree that a proliferation of charity, gambling and fast food shops is indicative of a down market area?At least Acton is very well groomed, with an uncanny number of "Barbershops/Hairdressers", I'm sure they're all legit.  😉

They're a scourge on our community - in so many ways, but I'm not sure what could be done to prevent even more of them being established.
