My Old China

I'm sorry to see that this restaurant has closed so quickly. I ate there maybe 4 times this year and it was very good with friendly, attentive staff.

The menu seems to be significantly cheaper than when it was a My Old China. - perhaps a lesson learnt from them?Was interested if the food would be as good as before - will also give it a go as the prawn toast before was outstanding - though very pricey.

Okay, finally made it to Peony and very happy with the result. I recommend the drunken duck, which was beautifully tender. The waiter was very friendly and helpful, making suggestions and ascertaining how we liked out food.Not many there. I believe they get busy at weekends but it may well be a case of 'use it or lose it'.I shall definitely be going again.

Walked past from a packed North China on NYE and it was almost empty… but probably hadn’t had time to find a clientele.

Now resurfacing as Peony. Lights on this evening and staff milling about. looking forward to trying it, maybe in the new year.

Yes, Adam, that was one of the things that attracted me and the friend I used to go with with: that there were always loads of Chinese people in there. It also got a great review from Giles Coren in The Times back in the spring.

Under the original owners it was always busy, often with many Chinese diners, which is always a good sign, so whoever took it over obviously didn't have their heart in it. It's a terrible loss to the area -- I ate their a couple of times and would have loved to do so again.

Wasn't it more that the original owners sold out - after not terribly long - and the new ones weren't as good?

Totally agree. I guess it was a victim of the current economic climate.
