Have donated money, but wondered if there was anywhere local (Acton, Ealing, Chiswick etc) that might be collecting practical stuff like blankets, warm clothes etc.

Good point Sara. This also links to Ealing Repair Cafe and other local menders and alterers in that initially choosing well, looking after and repairing and altering the things that you love to increase their working lives is more valuable than giving away stuff that won't sell and will end up exported and dumped or burnt. Less is more. There is always so much sorting involved... so sometimes when particul items are requested eg coats or babygrows or school uniforms - you are pre-sorting.

Please, please don’t give “stuff” The Red Cross call that sort of donation “A second disaster”: much of it is useless; it’s not targeted and it uses up desperately needed human and other resource to sort and use.So much better to make a financial donation. And if what you have is stuff, why not sell it and send the cash. If you can’t because it’s not worth anything, it probably would have hindered, not helped anyhow.

And the Disasters Emergency Committee have now set up their fund:https://www.dec.org.uk/appeal/turkey-syria-earthquake-appealIt does show how important it is to be prepared for disasters and ready to go to recce the area as soon as you can and search with sniffer dogs and other equipment.https://www.re-act.org.uk/
