From Acton history group. Gentle reminder of this event next Sunday. You may be interested in participating in a charming piece of Acton history that dates back to the 18th Century. St. Mary's extends a warm welcome to interested local people to attend the Annual Crayle Sermon and Civic Service on Sunday 5th February at 10.30 am. The Crayle Sermon which will be preached this year by Rev. Julia Palmer, takes place every year at St. Mary’s, Acton to commemorate the charity of Sarah and Anne Crayle. The service also acts as a Civic Service, and is normally attended by The Lord Lieutenant, MP, Mayor and CouncillorsIn 1730, Mrs Sarah Crayle, bequeathed £300, to be laid out in the purchase of land, so that the clear yearly rents and profits thereof might be paid to and applied by the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Parish of Acton for the preaching of a sermon, and for gifts to the poor.In 1759, Ann Crayle, bequeathed £700, in 3 per cent consols, the dividends whereof were to be paid to the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Parish of Acton for a further sermon, and additional gifts to the poor. In modern times the preacher of the Crayle Sermon is now presented with a payment of £5 and the remainder of the Crayle bequests are held along with other ancient bequests and distributed by the Acton (Middlesex) Charities (Acton (Middlesex) Charities | History (actoncharities.co.uk)).Full details of the Crayle bequests are on St. Mary’s website at: Acton Parish | The Crayle Sermon (stmaryacton.org.uk) Best wishes, David and Amanda
