WW2 Acton Mystery - can you help?
Hi Further to a previous post charting unrecorded pillboxes in Acton - I have another question.Twenty years ago, before I moved to Acton, I used to pass a pillbox on the Northwest side of Gypsy Corner - located between what is now Carphone Warehouse and Holiday Inn. The pillbox directly overlooked the junction with A40 and Horn Lane.I had always assumed it was demolished when they cleared the site and built Carphone Warehouse. But recently I looked closely at the site, and there is a grey-tiled block (the size of a pillbox) - surrounded by stairs on both sides that lead to a dead end fence. Is it possible that rather than demolish re-enforced concrete, they simply tiled it over?I’d love to know if anyone had an answer to this - or even remembers the pillbox that used to be there that was built into the foundations of a 1930s factory building. All local knowledge gratefully received!
