Acton pop up cinema

Anne Marie has written an account if the latest application on the front page. All you cinema buffs, if you could very kindly like and endorse the page we might get a share of the Mayor's regeneration fund for Acton. Wouldn't that be good? They will count the supporters though so please.....

We have begun to clean and paint the building now. 18 volunteers came yesterday and we will be at the building again on Monday from 9.00 am. If you can spare a few hours and can use a wet sponge or a paint brush, we would love to see you. Sociable atmosphere. Maybe pizza. Biscuits guaranteed. All welcome.

We did it. The lease was signed last Thursday and work began this morning. We have found chairs and two projectors. Looking for a screen. As you may have noticed the building isn't very clean. We have some volunteers coming to clean and paint this weekend and will be organising more groups. If you could spare a little time send a message to actonartsproject@gmail.com. The virtual concert in Friday evening raised almost £2500 in funds forthe pop-up. Grateful thanks to internationally renowned opera singer and classical tenor Neil Latchman who lives locally He offered his and his friends' talents completely free of charge. The concert was recorded in Acton Hill church. Musicians included Peter Robinson (flute) Lance Mok (piano) Yoshiko Endo (piano) and Mauricio Diaz Alvaraz (guitar). A wonderful evening and thank you again to everyone who bought a ticket, recommended the concert to friends and sat down to listen to these terrific musicians. Keeping it local.

Many apologies if I misled you in my last post. For the avoidance of doubt and to prevent me getting wild with zeros again, the cost of renovation of the building to listed building standard and building a two screen cinema is estimated at just under one million pounds. This figure does not include running costs or rent/rates. The Council has been very fair about a rent free period initially while we get going but no one is in any doubt that this venture will cost.

Ealing Council cannot afford to give the building for free as has happened to other PassmoreEdwards buildings like the former Shepherds Bush Library.This has been clear to all concerned from the start. Finance had been found to lease the building but COVID changed everything for cinemas over the last year. With the full support of the Council we decided to try opening as a pop up for 18 months to two years. We aim to build business, provide a centre within easy distance for everyone and encourage the necessary finance. In all it will cost about £100,000,000 to renovate the listed building and build a two screen cinema. We have to show that this can be a going concern to potential backers now. Have some fun along the way too. Over 5000 supporters now. Please be one of them

At the moment the 'Spacehive' crowd funding site for this project says this:"We have adapted our original project and will launch our transformation of the old Library with a pop-up cinema. This will house a single screen viewing area and a bar/café that will have independent traders present. The project will have distanced seats and will be ‘Covid-19’ prepared from the beginning. This will allow us to expand and add more seats, as the situation changes and evolves. It will also demonstrate the viability of the project, strengthening the proposed full development of the cinema. It will allow us to establish revenue streams with a minimal outlay and costs... We are excited to be fundraising for the equipment for the pop-up – and believe that this approach is the more creative and robust way of moving forward in the current circumstances."This seems a long way from the 'Community Arts Centre' that many imagined might be happening here.

Maybe i'm misunderstanding 'pop up'. I thought it was something that was there for a couple of weeks in an unused space and then disappeared? If so its not great news at all. I hope i'm wrong.

This is seriously amazing news, and if the Mayor can stump up £30,000, it shows the value of this project for our community.  So if everyone contributes, no matter how small, the target will be reached.....and we will have the benefit of a new community hub in Acton for years to come.

News today that Ealing won't get it's cinema this year. Perhaps Ealing residents would like to come to Acton. The bus stops outside the door. Let's give them a warm welcome!
