Everyone Acton cancels class for its older members
Last week I took my mum to the only gym class she goes to at Everyone Active. It used to be led by Linda, have about 25 people and be at the level with which she - not amazingly mobile and 88 - could cope with. Then there was another class for the slightly younger and somewhat fitter. And everyone was happy. Then the EA powers-that-be decided to axe the second class, combine it and move it upstairs to the community rooms. Now no-one (except said management) is happy. There were 45 people the class - which felt positively dangerous - and the ability range was so huge that mum's level meant half of them were hardly getting any exercise. But if the leader had gone higher and done floor work, half the ladies would have been unable to get down - or up again. This is the demographic that most needs both fitness and socialising and the two classes used to provide just that. Surely that is the point of municipal provision.I suspect lots of those who go now will just drop out, not have any exercise or jolly company and be sadder and slower as a result. Is that a good thing?
