Hakikat Food Centre on the High Street

Due to a change in my partner's work circumstances I've recently had to take over more of the cooking duties in the house. She suggested I go to Hakikat on the High Street to get ingredients. Now I'm wondering how on earth I hadn't been in this place before - it's a treasure trove. Huge selection of herbs at low prices, more varieties of nuts than I have ever seen anywhere else and good value fresh veg - if a bit limited in range. This is a local business that really deserves our support.

Yes, I really liked the corn crust, it was the actual chicken that I was just a bit disappointed with.

Just looked it up and Ottolenghi site and it says:"The addition of rose petals give a special sweetness and softens the chilli kick"

You can be comparatively un-posh and unskilled (by which I mean use Jamie's five ingredients cook book rather than the infinitely harder-work Ottolenghi) and still need rose harissa.Apart from the colour, how does it differ from the non-rose sort

This is good news. So much bad news around that a w3 source of rose harissa counters the Brexit gloom. I have searched for it in Hakikat and even asked one of the nice men who run the shop but they didn’t seem to know they have it. Thanks! Are you making chicken with a corn crust?

Are you sure it is definitely the rose one, i have found the normal harissa there, maybe I just didn't look hard enough, but thank you, I will have another look.

They do stock rose harissa. It's right at the top right hand corner as you enter opposite the butcher's counter.

I just wish they didn’t put fruit and veg out on the street.  Surely with that level of traffic they must be full of fumes?

So does Sainsbury's - Id be amazed if Hakekat doesnt....Someone else queried the preserved lemons and I eventually found three sorts...will look for the Harissa next time - the stocking order is quite impenetrable.

The only thing i've never found in there is Rose Harisa, still, waitrose in Chiswick stocks it!

I was given Simple by Ottolenghi for Christmas and it is has provided a number of dinners for us recently. Now I understand why it appears to have been written with this shop in mind.

Indeed it is the best shop in Acton. The veg may lack variety but everything is fresh and not wrapped in plastic (until you put it into a bag).  Proper celery, leaf spinach, cheap garlic etc. I reckon you can get everything there except pork.

Isn't it fab. Also has a very good Halal meat counter with tasty chickens. And odd things like orange-flower water and preserved lemons - critical if you are an Ottolenghi fan Apparently Yotam's partner Sami lives near here and sources his ingredients at Hakekat.
