That's a great list of practical shops Helen. In my original comment, I wasn't yearning for upmarket - Harvey Nichs ain't all that anyway - just functional and easier on the eye than the dreary offer of the old Oaks.  Nicer, well-maintained shops with low-to-middling price points in the new Oaks may indeed spread outside to the High Street. We can but hope Acton won't always look so down at heel. Like attracts like. Look at the fabulous changes to the Acton Central end of Churchfield Road - incremental and now everything's lifted.

I too find the 'arty' orange squiggle unattractive for what they're trying to sell.  Just makes the flats look a joke.  I miss Poundland - so brilliant for so many things not sold in the area that you have to go elsewhere for.  I found the old Oaks depressing - wasn't a destination shopping area, and didn't appeal to do a shop in either.  Took a friend there once who asked when it would be finished!  Told her no, this is it!  I would love: Poundland, sports shop, Lidl, larger Boots, Superdrug, Primark, Argos, TK Maxx, good stationers/bookshop, post office, Wilko, maybe a gym for some, nice jewellers, nice gift shop (yes, I know there are a few, but not for all pockets), some high street stores, some independent stores, and some others I can't think of now!  That'll do, and hopefully, it will then spread out onto the high street to pretty it up, some trees planted - just make it a nicer area for residents to shop in, somewhere people from other areas think to pop to (bringing more money in), etc.

I can't see anything wrong with Morrisons!  They have worked really hard to make it into a very decent supermarket - even the toilets have been upgraded.  The Oaks is beyond ugly and ruins nearly every aspect of Churchfield Road but that is what we expect from Ealing Planning Department.  Can somebody reassure me that the hideous yellow design on the glass is just a protective film???

Affordable usually means 30% of the units, ie, flats designated to those that can't afford to buy on the open market. Affordable market rents usually means 80%, ie, 20% less than the going market value. Still not affordable for most people.

How many of them are, you know, "Affordable"?Did I vaguely read somewhere that "Affordable" means 75% or some-such of Market Rates? I dunno, just asking.

I get the impression that the developers are more concerned with getting as many flats in the area!We were promised Waitrose, I knew that was a non-starter. They hinted we would get M&S but I doubt that will happen.If Lidl, Wilko and Iceland open here it would be great, Morrisons could do with some competition! Right now Acton High Street would not be my favourite shopping area.We have cracked and filthy pavements but no-one seems bothered to do anything about it!

Sports Direct, good luggage shop, Peacocks, Iceland were in there previously so I found it really handy. Am old school so not bothered about Bling lol. Functional Shops is what I want. Oh plus KFC on the outside.

Think you are right Roscoe, some of the larger food stores have taken to opening smaller shops dotted around and I was thinking the large departments might follow suit as they are struggling at the moment.

The "Old" Oaks suited and was obviously just right for the Acton demographic, many locals were happy with it and shopped there accordingly.We've been constantly lied to big time regarding the various more "up market" stores supposedly opening in the "New" Oaks but no "up market" store will ever open there, because of the local socio-economics - just look around!The villagy, microcosmic, eastern end of Churchfield Road is hardly "Acton" is it?!

Wow. Surprised anyone could find anything to like - bar the shoe repair fella - in the old The Oaks eyesore.  Not being overly dramatic here but it made my skin crawl. Wanted to jet wash the space - deeply depressing. Tacky tat covered in grime and dust. I don't love everything about the tower taking shape but I'm willing to withhold judgement on the shops front. To have Lidl nearby will be terrific. Their French continental coffee is worth bulk buying.

Brilliant - love Wilco.Can live without M&S and about time Lidl came this way. And if you've not been in Iceland since the '80s, they've also upped their game.

It's a total White Elephant. Should just have left it as it was. Least we had some decent shops inside there. Waitrose was never going to come here and I doubt M & S will now as they are closing loads of stores.

M and S just announced closure of 17 stores due to huge dip in profits- can’t see them opening at the Oaks now.
