Former Goldsmiths Arms pub

Had a leaflet through the door yesterday, in regard to the former Goldsmiths Arms pub.  There is a proposal for Metropolitan Thames Valley Housing to redevelop the pub into both a commercial space at ground floor level, and housing.  On the ground floor, uses could include: new pub, convenience store, community-run cafe, nursery, community centre, arts space etc - depending on local residents. There is a public exhibition being held on Thursday 1st November 2pm-8pm and Saturday 3rd November 10am-2pm at: Shepherds Bush Cricket Club, 38 Bromyard Avenue W3 7BP.  For further info: Goldsmiths@londoncommunications.co.uk, freephone 0800 307 7976.

Acton is starting to feel like the Canary Wharf of West London - more and more applications for tall buildings to go up.  Talking of buildings, at the bottom of Alfred Road (just North of the High Street), four new, very modern, homes have been built on the previous site of the funeral home.  To Let. Signs have been up for ages - they are still available for rent.  Beyond the money-signs for these developers - who probably live in lovely large houses, in lovely leafy areas, away from built-up areas, to keep building taller and taller buildings in a residential area such as a Acton is a blight on our community.  If Ealing council is so gung-ho for this - why not build all these tall buildings in Ealing?

Housing Associations (HAs) haven't had the interests of their tenants at heart for a very long time - and I speak as someone who lives in an NHG property. It dates back to about the time that Notting Hill Housing lost the Trust and became a Group. They lost the trust in every sense! And all HAs are the same - they are the property developers of the 21st century and only care about that. I am impressed with the campaign being fought on this issue and I sincerely hope that they win.

The saddest thing about these proposals is that this Developer is actually a housing association. I worked for Metropolitan myself for a number of years. It was originally set up to help newly arriving citizens from the Carribean find housing. The founder was the wife of a former Governor of Jamaica. What would she think of these proposals I wonder.

There is strong local opposition to this development.  Almost 2,000 people have  signed the petition.We have seen how developers are changing our community.  It seems that they only have regard for financial profit and are not considering the impact that they are having on the community.  A group of us are saying enough is enough.  The Goldsmiths Arms is a pub, it was purchased as a pub.  We are demanding that, in line with the Mayors Plan for London and the protection it affords London pubs, the Goldsmiths Arms is once again opened as a pub, restaurant and function room to serve the community.  If the current owner does not want to do this we demand that he puts the freehold back on the market at the going rate for a pub.We have seen the games these developers play.  This time we will hold our own consultation.  We will be there outside the exhibition with our banners and placards.  We will canvas the opinions of everyone who goes in.  We will publish our survey and we will use it to oppose any moves to redevelop the Goldsmiths Arms as anything other than a pub, restaurant, function room and garden for our children to play.There will be a meeting at St Dunstans Church on Monday 7.30pm.  All residents and patrons of the Goldsmiths Arms are invited. Do come along and join us in our opposition to this mindless destruction of our community.We know that not everyone is on our mailing list so we will be knocking on doors this weekend letting everyone know.  We appreciate any support you can give us.  We need many hands and voices. A community working together is powerful.  Together we can win this.
