I think that article is somewhat misleading. An increase in crime is obviously a concern, but the figures released by the Met paint a more nuanced picture.For example, here is the data for Acton Central, where the article says there has been a 43% increase in robberies: https://www.police.uk/metropolitan/E05000170/crime/robbery/stats/#crime_trendThe overall crime trend seems to be falling, which is encouraging.If you select Robbery from the list and hit Update, you can see a trend that also seems downward. By month, these are the figures, starting in July 2017 and ending June 2018:6, 2, 6, 8, 6, 6, 3, 4, 3, 2, 0 ,2If I sum this in four 3-month periods, it's 14, then 20, then 10, and finally "only" 4 in the last 3 months reported.I don't see how that can be represented as a yearly increase, let alone an increase of 43%.

Was quite a long time ago women were being pushed to the ground and the handbag taken they never had the option of handing anything over andOne ended up with a broken arm, I witnessed one of these attacks on a woman in her eighties luckily she fell on the grass verge so no broken bones.  How do people protect themselves from that apart from not carry a handbag of course.

It seems to have been in the last three or few years it has really got worse. Previously a lot of robberies were classified as theft because no actual threat of violence was used and people would sensibly hand over their phones when someone asked them. The problem in recent years has been that code protection on phones has made this type of crime more difficult and robbers are graduating to things like laptops, handbags and expensive watches which often require violence to get hold of.

I find your comment  about black people being more likely to be perpetrators of crime, problematic. I leave you to reflect on which crime specifically, would it include alcohol related crime?, or  white collar crime, would it be PPI miss-selling, or pension scamming, or extreme radicalisation, or racial discrimination  or race hate,.would it be tax evasion? I imagine you were not including those in your sweeping statement.

and she gives some figures about police staffing levels and referred to the College of Policing report - which I think is this one from 2017http://whatworks.college.police.uk/Research/Documents/SS_and_crime_report.pdfThe summary says:The report explores the relationship stop and search had with crime at a borough level in the Metropolitan Police over a 10-year period. Overall, it suggests that higher rates of stop and search (under any power) were associated with very slightly lower than expected rates of crime in the following week or month. Other relationships were occasionally found between the use of specific search powers and particular categories of crime. The inconsistent nature and weakness of these associations, however, provide only limited evidence of stop and search having acted as a deterrent at a borough level. It is possible that stop and search may be more strongly associated with crime at a more local level, assuming it is targeted appropriately in crime hot spots.32 pages in the report

Interesting, my view is if people don't feel safe on the street they will carry knives for their own protection so more people end up with them than would be the case if the stop and search was accepted by everyone.

Rupa repeats the lazy, misleading factoid about black people being stopped and searched more often. Yes they are, because they are more likely to be the perpetrators (and victims) of crime, and there are well known socio-economic explanations for this. The Met records the outcomes of stops and search, which shows about 30% result in arrests, fines or warning notices issued; it's the same percentage for whites, blacks and asians (which is how the Met breaks down their figures). Looked at as a whole, there is no unfair targetting of stop and search by race.

What can the police do, they are not allowed to stop and search, people are controlling our policing as it used to be and it should not be allowed.
