Gun lobby

In my last topic Chris Hurley mentioned the gun lobby, thank you Chris I'm interested in this and would love to know others views, my point would be that when they start confiscating weapons they are always taken from people who were legally allowed to own them rather than the ones who obtain them illegally and I don't see the sense in it at all.

"a legal right for blind people to have the right to carry firearms" - dontcha just love The U S of A!I'm never going there again because of the amount of guns in circulation.  An over reaction I know but I just don't like the place anymore.Shame really.

Janice, I attach two links to articles from a US magazine I subscribe to and which has tried to provide objective comments on the US gun and right to bear arms issue over many years (I fear neither are short reads). The 2013 article written after the Sandy Hook shooting seeks to show how simple changes are needed but politically avoided. The 2018 article shows how many of the arguments under both the Constitution and the NRA lack honesty but more importantly at the start shows a flavour of how the gun lobby currently operates based on fear and conventions. You don't have to only talk about W3 on this forum.  We're on the World Wide Web.  It's just that you may not get a lot of replies on the gun lobby unless there has just been another massacre in the US.  The POTUS doesn't say much about these probably because he doesn't want to upset those who voted him into power.  It would appear that under their ancient Constitution US citizens have the right to bear arms...  Thank goodness we don't.Piers Morgan wrote something on this subject - I think he was living in the US at the time.  You could google that.

As far as I know, the possession of firearms is already illegal in the UK, unless for legitimate purposes like hunting or security. Not sure what relevance this thread has to a local forum like W3. I’m sure there are plenty of US websites for pro- and anti- gun lobbyists to make their views known.

I don't think any US president has ever or will (or maybe even can) ever tackle the gun problem. It's so enshrined in the American psyche that the votes lost would be massive and there'd be civil uprising.The film Bowling for Columbine is an interesting look at the gun culture in the US and worth watching if you've not already.
