Woops, sorry, I omitted to change the heading. One of the most over-hyped films I have seen in a long time. It started well with an atmospheric picture of a more or less regular American middle-class family, the mother being played by the ever wonderful Toni Collette. Then stuff started happening involving death, hauntings, devilry, and all that Dennis Wheatley type blood, gore and apparitions that I thought we had left behind in the 70s. The film aspires to be a sort of Poltergeist meets Omen meets Rosemary's Baby but is a lesser achievement than any of those. Having said that it does have some good qualities - impressive music, clever cinematography, excellent acting. After a smart start and first half hour, for me it just went downhill and became increasingly ludicrous. One moment that a couple of critics had praised just elicited chuckles from a group of youngsters near us. When my wife went to the Ladies afterwards she overheard a couple of young women who were as unimpressed as I was so it's not just me being old and jaded. I thought Ghost Stories (see above) to be far superior. And The Babadook is another treat for horror fans, but this is not in that league. Unless you are someone who is open-minded about the existence of an actual Devil, poltergeists, and the functionality of Ouija boards, you should probably steer clear!
