18 pianists to perform Mozart's sonatas at St. Mary's
This Sunday (13 March) St Mary’s Perivale presents a unique festival of all 18 Mozart piano sonatas, each played by a different pianist of international standing.
The organisers say, “These pieces, lasting on average 20 minutes each, could be described as reflecting the composer’s character, embodying every emotion from affection and longing to sadness, joy, anger and triumph.”
There will be two sessions, 2pm–6pm and 7pm–10pm, and the entire festival will be livestreamed, via www.st-marys-perivale.org.uk
The pianists include Viv McLean, Dinara Klinton, Patrick Hemmerlé, Ashley Fripp and Iyad Sughayer.
St Mary’s Perivale says it is the only music venue in the UK to mount such ambitious classical music festivals. They are the brainchild of Dr Hugh Mather, who was recently awarded the Freedom of the Borough of Ealing in recognition of his achievement, over many years, in promoting classical music and fostering the careers of young musicians in Ealing. This honour also recognised his work at Ealing Hospital over a 35-year period, where he headed up the Diabetes department and produced a ground-breaking study that confirmed the four-fold higher incidence of diabetes within the Asian population.
The Friends of St. Mary’s Perivale have held over 950 concerts since 2005, with performances by 360 pianists and 160 violinists. Until lockdown they were staging 120 concerts a year and have built up a considerable reputation as a small concert venue.
