Operation International UK
November 26, 2024
A charity set up by a surgeon based at Ealing Hospital has been given special funding from the Royal College of Surgeons for England.
Sala Abdalla’s organisation was one of only three in the UK to receive from The Stefan Galeski Global Surgery Fellowship.
A £5,000 cheque was presented in recognition of the humanitarian work Operation International UK does in Africa.
She set-up the charity, in which groups of surgeons, nurses and anaesthetists volunteer to travel to low-income countries to carry out free operations and train doctors and nurses.
Sala said, “It’s a very proud moment and I am thrilled beyond words that my charity has received this recognition.”
She came to this country as a refugee with her family when she was just ten years old. She was determined to follow a career in medicine after being moved by the injustices of private healthcare in her homeland. Now she is one of only a handful of black female consultants working for the trust.
The Fellowship helps surgical trainees with a commitment to global health to contribute, learn from and participate in global surgery outreach initiatives.
