Baby Injured by Falling Lampost in Chiswick Has Died

Injured child pronounced dead in early hours

A baby boy seriously injured by a falling lamppost in Chiswick has sadly died.

He was pronounced dead at hospital at about 05:3 0hrs this morning, (Thursday, 25 February).

A joint investigation is underway by officers from Hounslow CID and the Specialist Crime Directorate, and the Health and Safety Executive.

The baby is not being named to protect the privacy of the family.

Police were called at 10:36 am on Tuesday, 23 February to reports of a woman and a baby injured by a falling lamppost in Sutton Court Road W4, at the junction with Heathfield Terrace.

A woman in her early sixties was taking to New Charing Cross Hospital. She was discharged on 24 February.

A spokeperson for the Council said, “This is an awful tragedy and our heartfelt sympathies go out to the injured and all their families. The council is cooperating fully with the Police and Health & Safety Executive investigations.”

The council is currently carrying out a Traffic and Transport Improvement programme in the area. The spokesperson said, "We have been waiting for Virgin Media’s contractors to move cabling in order to facilitate the works. No contractors were on site at the time of the incident."

The Turnham Green traffic and transport improvement scheme was designed to provide faster journeys for bus passengers by re-routing some services away from Sutton Lane North.

It involves changing several bus routes and improving the road network as well as providing improved pedestrians crossing facilities across Chiswick High Road, Sutton Lane North and Sutton Court Road, together with footway improvements at a number of locations around the Green.
