Opposition for new skate park from locals and Elthorne school
Hundreds of residents have given their backing for a new skate park to be built in Elthorne Park, Hanwell - but the local school doesn't want it.
The council is planning to spend £200,000 on the facility and has been asking for opinions on the proposals after Elthorne Park, Boston Road, was identified as a suitable location.
More than 2,800 questionanires were sent out to those living in the immediate area around the park.
Over 700 people responded to the paper questionnaire and 61.9% said Elthorne Park was the right place
Out of the 405 people who shared their views online, 76.3% agreed.
Overall 67% are in favour of the skate park being built on the proposed site.
However, despite this show of support, the governors and head teacher from Elthorne Park School have written to the council strongly objecting to the proposals.
They say they weren't originally consulted and don't believe Elthorne is the right place for a skate park. They believe it would be a distraction for pupils, encourage truancy and attract undesirable elements.
The school has the backing of Hanwell Community Forum, Elthorne Park Neighbours and residents in Townholm Crescent, the closest homes to the proposed site.
They are petitioning the council about the proposals.
Whilst the decision is not final Councillor Phil Taylor, Cabinet Member for Customer and Community Services, said: “I’m pleased to see that so many people chose to have their say on the plans. It’s important for us to get feedback from residents and the council will now consider this information before making a final decision. There are also a number of design options to consider to address concerns such as noise and security.”
