Local amateur theatrical group, St Faith’s Players, has commenced rehearsals for its Spring production of The 39 Steps.

It is to be a comedy version John Buchan’s spy novel perhaps best known due to the 1935 film by Alfred Hitchcock.

Set in 1914, it concerns a dashing young man who must solve a mystery to stop dastardly foreign agents from starting a war. It’s a blend of thrilling action and farce, with lots of fast-paced chases and mistaken identities. It’s also promises to be very funny, with rapid costume changes, physical comedy, and inventive use of props and sets to create different locations.

The play is usually performed with a small cast of 4, but there are loads of parts, and the players can still add performers. The group is on the lookout for a male actor aged between 20-40 to take on the lead role.

If you would be interested, contact the group via its website.

Rehearsals will be held on Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons at the 6th Brentford Air Scouts Group Scout Hut, Willow Close, (TW8 8DE) close to Brentford railway station. all performers need to be over 18 years of age for this production.

The play is to be staged at the drama studio at Brentford Girls School (rather than the main assembly hall) on the evenings of May 15th, 16th and 17th and last for an hour and a half.

St Faith’s Players started performing in St Faith’s Church Hall in 1977 with a concert to celebrate the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. Since then hundreds of people have taken to the boards, built sets, painted scenery and sewn costumes to keep the shows coming, with an annual pantomime a hightlight.

It aims to put on at least two productions each year, ranging from drama to comedy, thriller to Music Hall – all interspersed with a variety of social activities and fund raising events.
