Join a Heritage Walk and learn about the local area

May 16, 2025

A new series of walks from the Hounslow Heritage Guides will be starting with a Great West Road Centenary Tour.

It will begin at the Market Place in Brentford on Bank Holiday Monday 26 May at 2.30pm and will be led by James Marshall the author of the new book The Greate West Road - A Centenary History.

In 1933 the author, JB Priestly said that, being new, the Great West Road did not look English. He saw it as a Little California. Walkers will see some of what remains of this unique corridor of Art Deco architecture and hear about some famous, lost buildings of the inter war years.

This and the following walks cost £3 (cash) with children free.
There's no need to book - pay the guide before the start at 2.30 from the Market Place.

Other walks will be on Sundays

13 July - Brentford to Boston Manor. A linear walk which is an opportunity to explore the route of the Grand Union Canal, parts of Boston Manor Park and explore to hear the story of the House.

17 August - Brentford Through Time explores over 300years of the town's buildings.

12 October - Battles in Brentford recalls 3 major battles from the Romans crossing the Thames, the Saxon defeat of a Danish King and the sacking of the town during the Civil War in 1642.

For other walks in Chiswick, Isleworth and Hounslow Heath and free walks during September as part of Open City London Festival visit the Hounslow Heritage Guide web page.

The Hounslow Heritage Guides organise guided local history walks on Sunday afternoons every summer in Brentford, Chiswick and Isleworth with additional walks planned, in some walking seasons.

All walks can booked as private guided tours as required. For more about local history walks see Exploring Hounslow Borough's Heritage.

The guides reserve the right to cancel any walk without notice in exceptional circumstances.

This site remains committed to providing local community news and public interest journalism.

Articles such as the one above are integral to what we do. We aim to feature as much as possible on local societies, charities based in the area, fundraising efforts by residents, community-based initiatives and even helping people find missing pets.

We’ve always done that and won’t be changing, in fact we’d like to do more.

However, the readership that these stories generates is often below that needed to cover the cost of producing them. Our financial resources are limited and the local media environment is intensely competitive so there is a constraint on what we can do.
