The Iris Axon Concert Series Continues

Poppy Beddoe returns to play much-loved Lieder on the clarinet

The Iris Axon Concert Series continues this Sunday (5 December) with a programme presented by clarinettist Poppy Beddoe and pianist Roelof Temmingh.

Poppy last performed in the series at Acton Hill Church in 2019 and this time she will be playing various much loved Lieder on the clarinet. She says she and her pianist “feel that the clarinet lends itself beautifully to imitating the voice. We have chosen some of our favourite lied to accompany the transcription of the Bach Chaconne. We want to display the various imitative qualities of the instrument.”

In much demand as a soloist and a chamber musician, she performs extensively throughout the UK and Europe. Poppy graduated in Music from King's College London in 2014, followed by a Masters at the Royal Academy of Music in 2016. She is the Co-Artistic Director of the Berkshire Chamber Music Festival and a teacher at the Royal Academy of Music Junior Department.

Poppy has recently signed a recording contract with Ulysses Arts and will be releasing her debut lbum, Soliloquy, in December 2021. She is also looking forward to recording a concerto written for her by Matthew Taylor with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. She will première the concerto with the Farnham Sinfonia in 2022. In 2022 she will be the Artist in Residence of the Clifton International Music Festival.

She has been invited to give some solo recitals in Texas in 2023 and she has regular engagements in the South of France, notably at Conques and Marcilhac Abbeys. She is grateful for the support of the Talent Unlimited Charity, the Malcolm Arnold Trust and the Nicholas Boas Foundation.

South African pianist Roelof Temmingh is currently the Constant/Kit Lambert Junior Fellow at the Royal College of Music, supported by the Musicians’ Company. Upon completing his undergraduate studies at the RCM, studying piano with Nigel Clayton and Dina Parakhina, he was awarded the Tagore Gold Medal in 2019, and has since obtained a Masters of Music, also at the RCM. He has received masterclasses from pianists including Seymour Lipkin, Marios Papadopoulos, and Howard Shelley.

He also studied in Vienna with Paul Gulda, as a result of winning the SACS Music Competition in South Africa. Actively engaging in chamber music, he has performed at the Royal Albert Hall’s Classical Coffee Morning Series, the Royal Festival Hall, and recorded at Abbey Road Studios in 2021. Performances also include solo recitals in South Africa, UK, US, France, Spain, Sweden, Germany and Austria. In 2018 he joined the South African MIAGI orchestra for their European Tour, which took them to venues such as the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie and Amsterdam Concertgebouw.

The concert takes place on Sunday 5 December at 4pm at Acton Hill Church on the junction of the High Street and Woodlands Avenue.

Programmes can be purchased at the door. Tickets are £5.00 for concessions, £6.00 for adults and £2.00 for children.

The church still requires face masks where possible and social distancing.
